Iran launched attacks against US military targets in the Middle East on Monday, retaliating for the American strikes on Iranian territory and triggering a fresh escalation in the six month old conflict.

Iran's powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had targeted two US military bases in Washington's ally Jordan with ballistic missiles, claiming the strikes caused heavy damage.

Iran also said it had targeted US military personnel at an air base in the United Arab Emirates and shot down a US drone over the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest exchange came a day after the United States said it had struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, a small island located in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The IRGC said the American strikes had caused casualties and described its subsequent attacks on Jordan as retaliation for what it called US aerial aggression.
