The Guild of Sports Editors in Nigeria has commended President Bola Tinubu for what it described as a bold intervention aimed at reforming Nigerian football following the resignation of the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation.
The Guild, after an emergency meeting on Friday, said the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, the General Secretary and members of the Executive Committee must serve as the starting point for genuine and far reaching reforms rather than simply a change of personalities.
The development follows years of concerns over Nigeria's declining football fortunes, including the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for successive FIFA World Cups, the country's absence from the FIFA U-17 and U-20 World Cups, the poor performances of Nigerian clubs in continental competitions and the Super Falcons' historic failure to qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup.
While applauding President Tinubu for confronting the crisis, the Guild urged the National Sports Commission to ensure that any normalisation committee established to oversee the reform process is made up of individuals with proven integrity, competence and a genuine commitment to developing Nigerian football.
It warned against turning the committee into a platform for political patronage or rewarding friends and associates.
