The United States on Sunday said it had carried out airstrikes against two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, marking its first military strikes against Iran since late July.
US Navy Captain Tim Hawkins, in a statement, said US forces targeted the launchers after observing Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel preparing to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the strategic waterway.
Washington said the operation was intended to prevent Iran from deploying additional sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, just days after US forces announced they had completed clearing explosives from international shipping routes in the waterway.
The US Central Command said on X that its forces had taken limited, precise action against IRGC personnel involved in minelaying activities, describing them as an imminent threat to shipping in the strait.
The latest strikes come as the administration of US President Donald Trump has increasingly focused on applying economic pressure on Iran rather than launching major new military operations.
