Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has revealed that genotype was a major consideration when he was deciding to marry, following his disclosure that he has the SS genotype.

The singer made the revelation during a recent episode of the One54 Podcast, where he said he would not have proceeded with his relationship with his wife, Simi, if she had not been AA.

Adekunle Gold explained that he considered it important to know his partner's genotype because of the risk of having children affected by sickle cell disease.

He said his wife was tested and found to be AA, which gave him the confidence to proceed with the relationship.

Adekunle Gold has continued to advocate for sickle cell awareness since revealing his SS status. He married fellow singer Simi in January 2019, and the couple have two children.
