Five people have been killed and five others injured after an Amazon cargo plane crashed while landing at Miami International Airport in the United States.

The Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air, reportedly overshot the runway on Sunday and struck an airline cleaning van carrying seven people.

The aircraft then broke through the airport's perimeter fence before hitting a Toyota sport utility vehicle with three people inside. The two crew members on board the plane survived the crash.

Speaking at a news conference on Monday, the Chairwoman of the US National Transportation Safety Board, Jennifer Homendy, described the crash scene as utter devastation. She said it was too early to determine what caused the accident.

Investigators have recovered the aircraft's flight recorders and are expected to examine the plane's systems, the crew's experience and weather conditions as possible factors.
