The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Sokoto State University chapter, has given the Sokoto State Government a two-week ultimatum to implement agreements reached with the union.

The demand is contained in a statement signed by the branch Chairman and Secretary, Dr Bello Musa and Zulkallaini Shehu, and made available to journalists in Sokoto.

The union said the decision followed a meeting with the Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Hamza Maishanu, other government officials and ASUU representatives, after the expiration of an earlier two-month deadline.

According to the union, both parties reached and signed an agreement that the government would address its demands within two weeks, while the ministry would communicate the issues to the state governor, who is the Visitor to the university.

ASUU, however, expressed concern over the promise, saying the state government had previously failed to honour agreements reached with the union. The union said its demands were contained in an agreement signed with the government on March 4, 2024.

It warned that failure by the government to meet the demands within the two-week period could lead to an indefinite strike at the state-owned university.
