ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unresolved Welfare Issues, UNIZIK Branch Withdraws Services

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the Federal and state governments fail to resolve outstanding issues affecting university lecturers. The union said the unresolved matters include the payment of earned academic allowances and other conditions of service contained in agreements reached with the government.
ASUU warned that failure to address the issues could trigger industrial action across federal and state universities. The warning came as the ASUU branch of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, ordered its members to withdraw their academic and administrative services over the non-payment of their full August 2026 salaries.
In a statement jointly signed by the branch Chairperson, Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, the union said its congress resolved on Monday to withdraw services in line with a standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council. The union said the resolution empowers its branches to withdraw services when salaries remain unpaid beyond the third day of the following month.
