A delegation from the African Union has paid a courtesy visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as part of the union's Pre-Election and Needs Assessment Mission to Nigeria.

The mission, which runs from September 13 to 19, 2026, is aimed at assessing Nigeria's level of preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The delegation, led by former Ethiopian Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, was received at INEC headquarters in Abuja by the Commission's Acting Chairman, Professor Rhoda Gumus.

Mekonnen said the mission would assess key areas including voter registration, the application of electoral technology, logistics, funding, inclusion and transparency. He added that the delegation would identify potential gaps before, during and after the elections, while recommending measures that could support the electoral process.

Responding, Gumus, who represented the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, highlighted some of the commission's achievements so far.
