The Defence Headquarters has clarified that the reported withdrawal of about 200 United States personnel from Nigeria will not affect the longstanding security partnership between the two countries.
The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, gave the clarification during a joint security spokespersons' briefing.
Uba described the adjustment in the US military presence as a routine, mission specific development linked to particular operational and counterterrorism objectives. He stressed that the development should not be seen as a breakdown or termination of security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
According to him, the relationship between both countries remains strong, enduring and mutually beneficial, with intelligence cooperation, training and information sharing continuing.
Uba explained that Nigeria remains primarily responsible for defending its territory and protecting its citizens, while US assistance is intended to strengthen the capabilities of the Nigerian military.
He added that Nigeria and the United States would continue to assess security requirements jointly and could undertake additional interventions, including joint military strikes, where necessary.
