The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Federal Ministry of Power are set to strengthen collaboration against electricity vandalism, energy theft and other economic crimes threatening the power sector.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, stated this when he led a delegation from the ministry on a visit to the EFCC Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, at the commission's headquarters in Abuja.

Tegbe said vandalism and electricity theft are costing the country billions of naira annually and undermining efforts to improve power supply.

He explained that the ministry does not have the statutory powers to prosecute offenders, making the intervention of the EFCC necessary in investigating and prosecuting those involved in the criminal activities.

The minister identified vandalism as one of the major areas requiring the commission's intervention, saying the Federal Government has directed the ministry to raise awareness and ensure that those involved in stealing and buying stolen electricity infrastructure are prosecuted.
