The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for two weeks to allow emergency rehabilitation and maintenance works.

The bridge will be fully closed to traffic from Monday, September 7, 2026, and is expected to reopen on Monday, September 21, 2026.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued today by the Acting Federal Controller of Works, Federal Ministry of Works, Anambra State Field Headquarters, Timothy Emenike.

The First Niger Bridge, which links Anambra and Delta states, will undergo urgent repairs following concerns over the deteriorating condition of its carriageway and some structural components.

According to Emenike, motorists travelling between the two states and to destinations beyond Delta State have been advised to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi and Asaba during the closure.
