The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of 37 suspected illegal miners detained during enforcement operations against suspected illegal mining activities in the Wushishi-Lukoto axis of Niger State.

The miners reportedly died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Niger State Command.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the Federal Government's condolences to Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, as well as the government and people of the state.

Idris also sympathised with the traditional leaders and residents of Wushishi, particularly the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, in Abuja, the minister said the Federal Government shares in the grief arising from the incident.

He stressed that the protection of lives, human dignity and the fundamental rights of every Nigerian remains a solemn responsibility of the government.
