The Federal Government has rolled out 215,000 MAMA kits, 40,000 maternal food-support packs and 40,000 sets of newborn clothing for vulnerable women and families across the country.

The initiative was flagged off at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, and other stakeholders.

The First Lady described the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative, MAMII, as a bold intervention to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths through better awareness, emergency care and referral systems. She called for greater collaboration among governments, traditional and religious institutions, development partners and philanthropists.

The Health Minister, Muhammad Ali Pate, said the intervention is part of the government's strategy to expand access to essential healthcare. He said the government is targeting a 30 per cent reduction in maternal mortality and 20 per cent reduction in newborn mortality by 2028, with about 2.9 million pregnant women and families expected to benefit.

The WHO Country Representative, Pavel Ursu, said the success of the programme will be measured by its impact on access to quality healthcare and the number of lives saved.

The MAMII programme is also designed to encourage greater use of antenatal, delivery and postnatal services nationwide.
