FIFA has asked Nigerian football authorities to clarify reports of alleged government interference in the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation.
In a letter dated September 1, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom said the world football governing body was concerned by reports that NFF President Ibrahim Gusau had resigned following an alleged directive from the Presidency.
FIFA said, if confirmed, the development could raise concerns over the independence of the NFF under FIFA regulations. It cited Articles 14 and 19 of the FIFA Statutes, which require member associations to manage their affairs independently and without interference from third parties, including government authorities.
FIFA warned that government intervention resulting in the removal of elected football officials could amount to a violation of its statutes and potentially attract sanctions. The organisation has given the Nigerian authorities seven days to provide clarification.
FIFA wants written confirmation that Gusau's reported resignation was voluntary and made without external pressure. It is also seeking an official explanation from the Federal Government on the circumstances surrounding the reported resignation.
The football governing body further wants assurances that the NFF will continue to operate in line with its statutes and applicable FIFA regulations.
