First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called for greater attention to adult education in Nigeria, stressing that literacy is essential to improving livelihoods, growing businesses and accelerating national development.

The first lady made the call in a message marking the 2026 International Literacy Day, which also commemorates the 60th anniversary of the global observance. This year's celebration is themed, 'Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.'

The First Lady said Nigeria must expand opportunities for adults to acquire literacy, as well as basic digital and financial skills needed to participate effectively in an increasingly knowledge-driven economy.

She noted that equipping adults with reading and writing skills would benefit individuals, families, businesses and society at large.

Mrs Tinubu described literacy as fundamental to personal empowerment and national development, stressing that access to learning should not be limited by age or personal circumstances.

She said the 60th anniversary provides Nigeria with an opportunity to renew its commitment to expanding access to education and ensuring that people who missed formal education earlier in life are not permanently excluded from learning.
