Five Ebola survivors have been discharged from treatment centres in the Democratic Republic of Congo as the country's latest outbreak surpasses six thousand cases.
The survivors, including a healthcare worker, had been receiving treatment at a Doctors Without Borders Ebola treatment centre and the Ebola treatment centre at Beni Hospital.
They were presented with certificates confirming their recovery and thanked the medical teams that cared for them. The survivors also urged people experiencing illness to seek medical attention promptly.
Health workers and officials involved in the Ebola response celebrated the discharge, describing it as a significant achievement in the fight against the outbreak.
However, authorities say the outbreak has now recorded more than six thousand cases and claimed two thousand nine hundred and eleven lives. More than one thousand three hundred and sixty people have recovered from the virus, a development health authorities described as encouraging.
The outbreak, which is centred in eastern DRC, is spreading amid insecurity, population displacement, a strike by health workers and increased movement of people.
