The Kano State Council for the Prerogative of Mercy Committee, in partnership with the Nigerian Correctional Service, has begun visits to selected custodial centres across the state.

The initiative is aimed at reducing congestion in correctional facilities and improving the welfare of inmates.

The committee, led by its Chairperson, Azumi Bebeji, interacted with inmates and reviewed challenges affecting their welfare, rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Bebeji said inmates appealed for government intervention in several areas, assuring them that their concerns would be considered within available resources and the law. She reaffirmed the Kano State Government's commitment to a compassionate approach and urged the inmates to remain hopeful.

The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ahmed Lakpene, commended the committee's intervention, describing it as an important step towards reducing congestion and improving conditions in custodial centres.

Lakpene said the initiative is in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019, which prioritises humane custody, rehabilitation, reformation and the successful reintegration of inmates into society.
