Nairobi has been selected to host the 2029 World Outdoor Athletics Championships, becoming the first African city to stage the global track and field event.

World Athletics announced the decision following a council meeting in Budapest. Nairobi beat rival bids from London, Munich and Rome to secure the 2029 championships.

The 2031 edition has been awarded to Munich, while Beijing is scheduled to host the 2027 championships.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe described the bidding process as a difficult decision, with four strong proposals submitted for the 2029 and 2031 editions.

Coe said bringing the championships to Africa for the first time would be historic, adding that Nairobi presented a compelling bid. He said the decision would allow the championships to be staged across Asia, Africa and Europe over the next three editions.
