The Niger State Police Command says tactical teams of the police and military have been deployed to rescue more than 100 residents abducted by terrorists in Maburya community, Mariga Local Government Area.

The victims were abducted after suspected bandits invaded the community on Saturday night, shooting sporadically into the air before taking residents into the forest.

Police said some elderly and pregnant women, including nursing mothers, were later released, while others remained in captivity.

A statement from the command said the incident was reported to Bangi Division on September 13th at about eight p.m. The police said security forces have been deployed to the area and rescue operations have been intensified.

The attack is the latest in a series of mass abductions in Niger State. More than 500 people were reportedly abducted from Borgu Local Government Area in August, with the victims still being held by terrorists.

The police say further developments will be made public as the rescue operation continues.
