The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that Nigeria's National Identification Number, NIN, database has been breached.

In a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the Commission described the claim as false and unfounded. NIMC said the video being circulated is a recycled report from 2024, which had previously been disclaimed.

The Commission stressed that the National Identity Database, NIDB, has not been breached or compromised at any time.

It said it maintains robust, multi-layered security systems to protect the personal data of registered citizens and legal residents, in line with international best practices.

NIMC also warned against the circulation of unverified claims, saying such reports could mislead the public and cause unnecessary panic.

The Commission highlighted its recently launched NIN Authentication, or NINAuth, a suite of web, API and mobile verification services designed to strengthen data security and privacy.
