Olympic organisers have approved a stretch of the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, for canoeing events at the 2032 Brisbane Games, despite the river being home to about 500 saltwater crocodiles.

An independent technical assessment confirmed the course is suitable for Olympic and Paralympic competition. The review focused on weather conditions, water levels and flood risk, rather than the presence of crocodiles.

The venue is already used for training and competitions. Both World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide have endorsed the site, saying it can provide fair conditions for athletes.

Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris said the approval gives greater certainty for planning and confirmed that Rockhampton remains the focus for the flatwater events.

He had earlier dismissed concerns about the crocodiles, comparing them to sharks in the ocean.
