Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has backed the removal of the petrol subsidy, saying those calling for its return are not acting in Nigeria's best interest.

Otti stated this in an interview today, while discussing the economic impact of subsidy removal and his longstanding position on the policy.

The governor said he has consistently opposed subsidising fuel consumption, arguing that government resources should instead be channelled towards boosting production. According to him, the situation at the time presented an opportunity for Nigeria to end the subsidy regime.

Otti also argued that subsidising fuel consumption encouraged waste, as consumers are not bearing the full cost of the product.

The governor acknowledged that removing the subsidy would initially create economic hardship for Nigerians but maintained that the policy is necessary.
