South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has withdrawn from public engagements after returning from the BRICS summit in India.

The Presidency said the 73-year-old returned from the summit on Monday and has been advised by his doctors to rest and recover.

The development comes as Deputy President Paul Mashatile is also away from public duties, recovering from a minor medical procedure.

According to the Presidency, where possible, President Ramaphosa has asked respective ministers to represent him at scheduled engagements.

The BRICS bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, concluded its two-day summit in New Delhi on Sunday, with discussions focused on inclusive global growth and the Middle East.

In a statement, Deputy President Mashatile said his recovery is progressing well and that he is regaining strength each day.
