At least 12 people have been killed and 20 others injured in overnight Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and the surrounding region. Officials say two children are among those injured.

Six of the casualties were railway workers with Ukraine's state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, after a depot was hit in Kyiv. Eight people were killed in the capital, where fires broke out in three districts. Another four people died in the nearby town of Boryspil after a residential building was hit.

Russia says its latest large scale attack targeted Ukrainian military and energy facilities using high precision weapons. Moscow also reported that one person was killed in Ukrainian strikes on Russia's western Belgorod region.

The latest attacks come a day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. Speaking at a security summit in Kyrgyzstan, Modi said continued fighting was setting humanity back, while every step towards peace offered hope.
