Airlink has defended the low level flyby of two of its aircraft over a packed rugby stadium in Cape Town, South Africa, ahead of Saturday's Test between the Springboks and New Zealand's All Blacks.
The aircraft flew over the DHL Stadium as part of a planned display ahead of the highly anticipated match. The flyby attracted widespread attention on social media, with some people questioning the safety of flying so close to a crowded stadium.
Airlink, however, says the display was carefully planned and rehearsed, and received approval from the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
The airline described the flyby as a memorable formation display, featuring two specially liveried Embraer aircraft. One aircraft, an E190, was painted green to represent the Springboks, while the other, an E195, was painted black in recognition of the All Blacks. Both aircraft also carried the official tour logo.
Airlink says the display was staged as part of the build up to the highly anticipated clash between the two rugby rivals.
