South African aviation authorities are reviewing a low altitude flyover by two Airlink passenger jets before a rugby match at Cape Town's DHL Stadium, following concerns over aviation safety.
The South African Civil Aviation Authority says it has obtained flight data recordings from the aircraft and requested additional information from Airlink. The authority says a full report, including recommendations, will be issued after the review.
The flyover took place on August 29, ahead of the Springboks and All Blacks rugby match, and drew cheers from an estimated 56,000 spectators. However, videos of the manoeuvre circulated online, sparking debate over the safety risks involved.
The SACAA says Airlink has withdrawn plans for another flyover at an upcoming rugby match in Soweto.
Airlink, meanwhile, says the manoeuvre was carefully planned and rehearsed, with safety as its first consideration.
