The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria has urged authorities to respect the rule of law in the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

In a statement issued recently, the council's Secretary General, Nafiu Ahmad, expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding El-Rufai's detention and reported difficulties in meeting his bail conditions.

The council said the situation could conflict with due process and constitutional protections, stressing that El-Rufai, like every Nigerian, has fundamental rights and remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.

It said Nigeria's constitutional democracy requires authorities to uphold due process, fair hearing and lawful detention, regardless of a person's political position or affiliation.

The council also clarified that its position does not amount to support for any alleged offences involving the former governor. It warned that actions perceived as arbitrary or politically motivated could erode public confidence in government institutions and weaken democratic governance.
