Major rail disruption has hit parts of the Netherlands, including Amsterdam, following suspected sabotage of railway tracks.

Railway operator ProRail warned passengers in central and northern parts of the country to expect cancellations and delays on Tuesday. The closure of some level crossings is also expected to affect road traffic.

Local media reported that pipes had been attached to railway tracks at several locations. ProRail said the incidents appeared to be an intentional disruption caused by human action.

The railway operator said no suspects or motives had been identified, while a national police unit has launched an investigation.

At least 15 disruptions were recorded across the rail network on Tuesday, with services to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport and the city of Utrecht among those affected.
