Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Niger's capital, Niamey, in support of the country's military leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, following a reported attempt to overthrow the military government.

The demonstration came days after loyalist forces, backed by Russian partners, reportedly thwarted an army mutiny that triggered intense fighting at several sensitive locations in the capital.

Tiani, who seized power in a 2023 coup, has not made a public appearance or issued a statement since the attempted uprising.

The demonstration on Wednesday brought together thousands of people, including supporters of the junta and government ministers, at the Place de la Concertation. Hundreds of people had gathered at the same location on Saturday as clashes were reported in the city.

Official media say similar demonstrations were planned in other major cities across Niger. Protesters were heard chanting against what they described as imperialist influence, while Russian flags were also seen among the crowd.
