United States President Donald Trump has dismissed growing concerns about the safety of artificial intelligence, calling the warnings a hoax and criticising calls for tighter safeguards on the rapidly developing technology.

Trump's comments follow remarks by Jack Clark, co-founder of AI company Anthropic, who told journalists that the industry may eventually need a mandatory kill switch that can be independently checked.

Clark's warning comes amid growing concern among executives and employees at major artificial intelligence companies about the potential risks AI could pose to humanity.

The concerns have also contributed to a selloff in technology stocks, as investors assess the possibility that increased regulation or safety measures could slow the multibillion-dollar development of AI.

In a series of social media posts, Trump compared concerns about AI to what he called the Global Warming Scam and other controversies he has previously described as hoaxes.
