Nigerian Afrobeats star, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has made history as the first Nigerian to present an award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. 

The singer presented the 2026 Sócrates Award to English footballer Bukayo Saka, October 26, at the Palladium Theatre in London, United Kingdom. Speaking about his football academy ahead of the presentation, Burna Boy expressed hope that one of his academy’s players would one day receive an award at the prestigious football ceremony. 

The singer’s appearance at the ceremony follows his reported performance at the 2026 National Football League event in Paris. His participation further highlights his growing presence at major international sporting events, having also performed alongside Shakira at the FIFA World Cup final. 

Burna Boy launched his football academy in Lagos in August 2024 as part of efforts to support and develop young football talents in Nigeria.
