DECAN Conference: Kana Urges Defence Correspondents to Spotlight Troops’ Sacrifices and Achievements

The Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Abubakar Ibrahim Kana, has urged defence correspondents to adopt balanced reporting by highlighting both the sacrifices of Nigerian troops and their successes in the fight against insecurity. Kana made the call in Abuja during a meeting with the leadership of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria, DECAN, ahead of its annual conference. The former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence urged journalists who have accompanied troops to operational theatres to report the difficult conditions under which soldiers operate, while also highlighting gains recorded against banditry, insurgency and other security threats. He commended DECAN for its coverage of military operations and the Armed Forces for granting journalists access to operational areas. Kana also highlighted reforms undertaken during his tenure at the Defence Ministry, including plans to harmonise the medical services of the Army, Navy and Air Force into an Armed Forces Medical Corps, establish a military medical college and develop the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna as a teaching hospital. He further disclosed efforts to expand local defence manufacturing through increased private-sector participation and proposed amendments to the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Act. Earlier, DECAN President, Odita Sunday, commiserated with the families of military personnel and civilians killed in Monday’s helicopter crash. Sunday also praised Kana for maintaining a cordial relationship with defence correspondents during his tenure at the Defence Ministry.
