Defence Minister Calls for Repositioning of MNJTF Against Evolving Threats

The Defence Headquarters has called for the repositioning of the Multinational Joint Task Force, to effectively tackle evolving security threats in the Lake Chad Basin and the wider Sahel. Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa, made the call today while opening a two-day high-level international forum on the future of the MNJTF at the National Defence College in Abuja. Musa said the regional security environment had changed significantly since the establishment of the task force 11 years ago, requiring a review of its structure, capabilities, intelligence, command and control, logistics and financing. He urged stakeholders to develop practical and sustainable measures to strengthen the MNJTF, particularly in the face of changing security threats and patterns of international support. In his remark, Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede said the transnational nature of contemporary security threats requires sustained cooperation stressing that the security of the Lake Chad Basin remains a shared responsibility and called for stronger partnerships among regional and international stakeholders.
