DR Congo: Ex-President Kabila Named Leader of New Rebel Coalition

Former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila has been named leader of a new rebel coalition seeking to overthrow the government of President Félix Tshisekedi. The Front for the Refoundation of the Nation, F-R-N, announced that it would coordinate resistance forces to end what it described as tyranny in the country, saying it would pursue its objectives by all means, including force. The announcement marks a clear indication of Kabila's direct involvement in an armed movement, a year after he was sentenced to death in absentia for treason. He had previously denied links to the M-23 rebel group. The coalition was unveiled at a press conference at Kabila's residence in Goma, the largest city in eastern DR Congo, which has been under M-23 control since last year. M-23 leader Sultani Makenga has been named one of Kabila's four deputies in the new coalition, alongside three other figures from the Alliance Fleuve Congo and M-23 alliance. The development comes days after Kabila announced plans to outline how Congolese citizens could act to rescue their country. Last Friday, the former president accused Tshisekedi's administration of disregarding proposals he submitted last year, including initiatives aimed at ending the conflict in eastern DR Congo.
