Drone Strike Kills 21 at Market in Sudan’s Darfur as Attacks Disrupt Power Supply

At least 21 people have been killed and more than 40 others injured in a drone strike on a market in Sudan’s western Darfur region, as separate attacks disrupted electricity supplies across parts of the country.
According to witnesses and medical sources, the strike hit a market in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State and a stronghold of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. A medic at Nyala Hospital confirmed that 21 people were killed and more than 40 injured, although the number of casualties who were RSF fighters could not be established. Sudan’s military, which has been fighting the RSF since April 2023, regularly carries out strikes on Nyala, where the paramilitary group has established a rival administration.
Meanwhile, an RSF drone attack on Tuesday targeted the Al-Markhiyat transformer station, disrupting electricity supplies across large parts of Khartoum and Al-Jazira states. The attack followed a coordinated drone assault on six power stations on Monday, which reportedly left millions of people without electricity in Al-Jazira, White Nile, Sennar and Gedaref states.
The conflict is increasingly being fought through drone warfare, with both sides carrying out attacks that have killed civilians and damaged critical infrastructure. According to United Nations figures, drone strikes killed more than 300 people and injured hundreds of others during the first three weeks of October alone.
The war has also triggered widespread displacement and a severe hunger crisis, with aid workers estimating that more than 200,000 people have been killed since the conflict began.
