Ex-Rwandan Soldier Found Beheaded in Uganda, Raising Fears Among Exiles

A former Rwandan soldier and outspoken critic of President Paul Kagame has been found beheaded in Uganda, raising fresh concerns over the safety of Rwandan opposition figures living in exile. Fifty-year-old Robert Kabera was found dead on the outskirts of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, over the weekend. Ugandan police said that his head had not yet been recovered, as investigations into the killing continued. Kabera, a former army sergeant major, fled Rwanda after facing sexual assault allegations, which he denied. He later sought asylum in Uganda, alleging political persecution. His family said he had travelled to inspect a construction site about 45 kilometres from Kampala before his death. Kabera was also a musician and YouTuber, with more than 144-thousand subscribers. He regularly published videos criticising the government of President Kagame. His widow, Jeanne d’Arc Rwigema Uwizeye, says she now fears for the safety of her family. Meanwhile, the opposition Rwanda National Congress has called for a full investigation, saying the killing has heightened concerns among Rwandans living abroad.
