The Federal Government has approved plans to develop new Eastern and Western electricity grids as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s recurring national grid collapses. The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this at the recent HBSAN Energy Conference in Lagos, where he outlined measures to strengthen the country’s electricity transmission infrastructure. Tegbe said the government was preparing to commence the procurement process for the projects, noting that Nigerians could begin to experience their benefits within two to three years. He also revealed that a nationwide technical audit of electricity infrastructure had commenced to identify existing challenges in the power sector and determine priority areas for intervention. According to the minister, the audit will help identify faults in the electricity network and establish which facilities require urgent repairs, upgrades or replacement. Tegbe said President Bola Tinubu had approved the commencement of the process to develop the Eastern and Western grids, describing the initiative as part of broader efforts to improve the reliability of electricity transmission across the country.
