FG Raises Alarm as Drug-Resistant Infections Kill 64,500 Nigerians

The Federal Government has raised the alarm over the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, estimated to have caused 64,500 deaths in Nigeria in 2019. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, expressed the concern at a joint ministerial press conference in Abuja ahead of the fifth Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance, scheduled for December sixth to eighth, 2026. Pate, who spoke on behalf of the ministries of health, agriculture, livestock development and environment, said antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat to public health. He warned that when antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines stop working, routine infections become dangerous, while surgery and childbirth carry greater risks and healthcare costs increase. The minister said the priority was to translate international commitments, including the 2024 United Nations General Assembly Political Declaration on AMR, into practical action.
