Vice President Kashim Shettima has proposed an annual review of state electricity markets to assess the implementation of the Electricity Act 2023 and accelerate reforms in Nigeria’s power sector. Shettima made the proposal today at the National Stakeholders’ Workshop on the Electricity Act 2023 in Abuja, where he called for stronger coordination between federal and state governments to improve electricity supply, attract investment and protect consumers. The Vice President, represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, proposed a National Electricity Reform Review and Implementation Framework involving the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Federal Ministry of Power, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and state electricity regulatory institutions. He said the framework would help identify implementation challenges, address regulatory bottlenecks and accelerate investment in electricity generation, transmission and distribution. Shettima also urged states that are yet to establish electricity regulatory commissions to begin the necessary legislative and institutional processes without delay. He called on states that have made progress in implementing the law to share their experiences and technical expertise with others, warning against establishing regulatory institutions that existed only on paper.
