FG Woos Investors, Targets Meter Deployment, Improved Gas Supply

The Federal Government has invited investors to participate in the next phase of Nigeria’s power sector reforms, identifying accelerated meter deployment and improved gas supply as immediate priorities. Speaking at the NAEC Energy Conference 2026 in Lagos, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the value of an energy asset could only be realised when it delivers reliable electricity to a customer who pays for the service. Tegbe, who was represented at the conference by the ministry’s Acting Director of Press, Clement Ezeorah, said policymakers and investors must identify the actual constraints within the electricity value chain before committing funds to new projects. He warned that interventions must address the specific challenges affecting fuel supply, power plant conditions, transmission, distribution or payment collection, noting that expanding capacity without resolving the underlying problems would waste capital without improving electricity supply to consumers. The minister described Nigeria’s electricity market as a two-tier structure comprising the federal market, which covers interstate and international electricity trade and the national transmission system, and state-regulated markets established under the Electricity Act 2023. He maintained that Nigeria would continue to require a functional interconnected electricity network to meet rising demand and support economic expansion.
