At least two persons have died, while more than 18 communities have been submerged by flooding in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, displacing thousands of residents and destroying homes, farmlands and roads. The flooding, triggered by torrential rainfall and the overflow of the River Benue, has affected several communities in the Eke Development Area, leaving residents struggling to access essential services. The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Nawani Aboki, confirmed the deaths and the extent of the damage while briefing journalists in Lafia on Monday. Aboki said the affected communities were located along the River Benue, with Agyema among the worst-hit areas. He added that more than eight communities had been submerged in the area, while Rukubi and Akpanaja were also affected. The Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, NASEMA, had earlier reported that between 4,000 and 5,000 residents were displaced across 11 communities. However, the commissioner said subsequent assessments identified seven additional communities, bringing the total number affected to more than 18. According to him, many displaced residents have taken refuge in neighbouring communities on higher ground, including Agyema, Agbachi and Rukubi. He noted that the influx of displaced persons had placed additional pressure on host communities struggling to accommodate the victims.
