France Curfews Help Restore Calm After Riots, Says Prime Minister

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu says targeted curfews have helped maintain calm following a weekend of riots and looting across parts of the country. The curfews were imposed in several areas, including Place de la République in central Paris, where protesters had gathered over the weekend, and the Les Halles shopping district. Restrictions on the movement of young people and public gatherings were also introduced in cities including Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice and Lyon in the south, as well as Lille and other towns in the north. Lecornu thanked police officers and gendarmes for enforcing the measures, saying further curfews on Tuesday night would depend on the security situation in affected areas. In a social media post, the Prime Minister said decisions would be made on the ground by regional authorities and local mayors, according to local needs. Earlier, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged that police had lost control in some cities during the unrest. Nuñez faced criticism from opposition politicians over the authorities’ preparedness for the disorder and offered his resignation on Monday. However, President Emmanuel Macron rejected the resignation.
