Global Stocks Rise as Oil Prices Fall on Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire Announcement

Global stock markets largely rose today as oil prices fell following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Brent crude fell 1.2 per cent to 103 dollars, 48 cents a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate dropped 1.5 per cent to 90 dollars, 50 cents. The decline in oil prices helped boost several Asian markets, while US stock futures also traded higher. The market reaction came despite renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including a deadly strike on Riyadh’s international airport. Investors are also watching key US inflation and retail sales data, as well as the start of the corporate earnings season, for indications that could influence the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decisions.
