The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has outlined a series of measures, including nationwide training, artificial intelligence deployment and enhanced security preparations, ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a world press conference today, the INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan said state-level training for Registration Area Technical Support Personnel would take place in November 2026, with a strategic briefing scheduled for December 13. According to him, a Local Government Area readiness audit would follow on January 13 and 14, 2027, as part of efforts to assess the commission’s preparedness ahead of the elections. On the use of artificial intelligence, the commission disclosed that it has established a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division within its ICT Department. The chairman said AI auditing tools have been integrated into the commission’s result-verification process under a five-pillar AI governance framework. He added that an AI governance policy is being finalised, while INEC is working with international technology companies and partners to integrate AI-powered anomaly detection tools into its systems. INEC also announced plans to conduct a nationwide mock accreditation and election simulation exercise in November 2026.The commission also announced that it would work with the Federal Ministry of Justice to strengthen enforcement against vote-buying as part of broader efforts to safeguard the integrity of the 2027 elections.
