Mozambique’s President, Daniel Chapo, has given citizens until December to surrender illegally held firearms, warning that authorities will forcibly collect the weapons after the deadline. Chapo says individuals who surrender their firearms before the expiration of the police amnesty programme will not be questioned, punished or detained. Speaking at the closing ceremony of a special operations training course, the president urged police officers to maintain discipline, professionalism and respect for human rights while carrying out their duties. He also called for stronger cooperation between the police and other security agencies to tackle crimes including human and drug trafficking, kidnapping, organised crime and cybercrime.
