Reps Demand Stronger Ebola Preparedness, Release of Outstanding Health Funds

The lawmakers also urged the government to release all outstanding appropriated funds to relevant health agencies to strengthen the country’s preparedness and response capabilities. The resolutions followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Isuikwato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, Amobi Ogah, during today’s plenary.
Presenting the motion, Ogah described Ebola as a severe and potentially fatal infectious disease that requires early detection, effective infection prevention and control measures, and coordinated public health interventions to limit transmission and save lives. He expressed concern over the confirmation of an Ebola case involving a woman who arrived in Abuja from Uganda and subsequently tested positive for the virus.
Ogah warned that delays in identifying suspected cases, conducting laboratory tests, isolating infected persons, tracing contacts and providing prompt medical care could increase the risk of transmission and place additional pressure on Nigeria’s healthcare system. Following deliberations, the lawmakers urged the Federal Government to immediately mobilise public and private healthcare institutions, as well as state and federal health agencies, and place them on high alert to prevent further transmission.
