Reps Seek Transparent Framework for Electric, CNG Vehicle Imports

The House of Representatives has called for a transparent regulatory framework for the importation of electric vehicles, compressed natural gas CNG-powered vehicles and related infrastructure, proposing that government incentives be tied to investments in local servicing, technical training and refuelling facilities.
The proposal followed a motion moved by Lagos lawmaker Ademorin Kuye during Tuesday’s plenary session. Kuye said the framework would ensure that companies benefiting from import duty concessions and other fiscal incentives demonstrate their commitment to developing the local infrastructure and technical capacity needed to support clean-energy vehicles.
He noted that Nigeria had introduced policies promoting electric vehicles, CNG-powered vehicles, liquefied petroleum gas vehicles and other clean transportation technologies as part of its energy transition and economic diversification agenda.
According to the lawmaker, the Federal Government’s incentives are intended to encourage investment in clean mobility and expand access to charging stations, CNG refuelling facilities, maintenance centres, spare parts and after-sales services.
The House consequently urged the Federal Government to establish a transparent licensing and approval framework for the commercial importation of electric vehicles, CNG vehicles and related clean mobility equipment.
