The Senate leadership has commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other political leaders over the emergence of the Wike-led Rainbow Coalition, describing the alliance as a step towards promoting political unity ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, made this known during plenary today, expressing optimism that the coalition would encourage an inclusive political campaign anchored on ideas and democratic principles. Bamidele said the development reflected efforts to bring political leaders from different parties together in support of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. The Senate leader also expressed satisfaction with the decision to appoint former Gombe State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, to coordinate the Rainbow Coalition in Gombe State. However, the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, declined to make a detailed comment on the development and only seconded the motion for adjournment. Reacting to Moro’s action, Senate President Godswill Akpabio suggested that the minority leader had adopted the positions expressed by previous speakers. Akpabio described the inclusion of politicians from other parties in president Tinubu's presidential campaign council as a historic development, arguing that such an arrangement was unprecedented since the return to democratic rule in 1999. He said the decision demonstrated a commitment to political cooperation and unity of purpose ahead of the forthcoming election.
