Senate to Probe Military Aircraft Safety After Ondo Crash

The Senate has resolved to investigate military aircraft maintenance, operational safety standards and funding following the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, which reportedly killed 25 people. The resolution followed a motion sponsored by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force, Senator Osita Ngwu, during plenary on Tuesday. The lawmakers mandated the Senate Committees on Air Force and Aviation to engage relevant authorities, assess the airworthiness of military and presidential aircraft, and investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Senate President Godswill Akpabio stressed the need for adequate funding to maintain and replace ageing military aircraft, noting that the safety of personnel defending the country must remain a national priority. He also called for the public disclosure of investigation findings to ensure transparency and accountability. Akpabio said the families of the deceased deserved answers and concrete measures to prevent similar tragedies, beyond expressions of sympathy. The planned investigation is expected to identify gaps in aircraft maintenance, operational safety and budgetary allocations, and recommend measures to improve military aviation safety.
