President Bola Tinubu has urged judges and justices to close legal loopholes exploited by politically exposed persons and organised crime groups to delay or frustrate criminal trials. President Tinubu made the call on Tuesday in Abuja at the eighth annual capacity-building workshop for judges and justices, organised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the National Judicial Institute. The President, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, also called for a review of prosecution strategies, outdated legal precedents and procedural gaps that allow influential individuals to evade justice. He described financial and economic crimes as an existential threat to Nigeria, warning that corruption affects all arms of government and spares no one. President Tinubu stressed that the fight against corruption should not be seen as the responsibility of the executive alone, noting that compromised public services affect the legislature, judiciary and ordinary citizens. He urged the judiciary to prioritise the public interest over technical arguments that shield criminality, insisting that the courts must uphold both the spirit and letter of the law.
